(Yumuktepe Mound)
——Kültür Portalı
——Persée
——Kültür Portalı
(Anadolu Agency)

(Yumuktepe)

Yumuktepe Mound
Yumuktepe Mound (Yumuktepe Höyüğü) is a prehistoric settlement mound in Mersin’s Toroslar district, beside the Müftü Stream. Its archaeological sequence begins around 7000 BCE and preserves evidence from the Neolithic through later prehistoric, Hittite, Iron Age, and medieval occupations, making it unusually valuable for tracing thousands of years of settlement. Kültür Portalı
Nine millennia of settlement
Yumuktepe is a tell, an artificial hill created as successive communities built new settlements over older ones. Early excavations identified 33 levels, while later work revealed a substantially more complex stratigraphy; Early Neolithic levels have been radiocarbon-dated to roughly 7000–6200 BCE, with later occupation extending into the Middle Ages. Persée
What archaeologists found
The earliest inhabitants lived in wattle-and-daub structures and practiced agriculture and animal husbandry; excavations have uncovered hearths, storage pits, pottery, and other evidence of everyday life. Later layers include fortified Chalcolithic settlement, substantial walls associated with the Hittite period, Iron Age remains, and a fortified medieval settlement dating roughly to the 10th–13th centuries. Agriculture and early farming
Yumuktepe is particularly important for understanding the spread and development of farming in the eastern Mediterranean. Archaeobotanical research has recovered Neolithic wheat remains, while the broader evidence documents an agricultural economy stretching back approximately 9,000 years; this helps connect prehistoric Anatolia with developments in the Fertile Crescent. Excavations and continuing discoveries
. The site remains archaeologically productive: work reported in 2025 identified an Early Bronze Age horseshoe-shaped hearth and storage silo, adding evidence for a period that had previously been less clearly represented at the mound. Kültür Portalı
Seeing Yumuktepe today
The mound survives within modern Mersin rather than as an isolated ruin, so its appeal is primarily the extraordinary depth of human occupation beneath an otherwise modest-looking hill. Many objects excavated there are displayed at the Mersin Museum of Archeology, making the museum a useful complement for understanding what the excavated layers actually contained
