🇺🇸 USA vs 🇨🇳 China vs 🇯🇵 Japan vs 🇮🇳 India — number of carriers, size, aircraft, missiles, nuclear-powered or not, and which navy is strongest in 2026.

yes

Yes. If we compare the United States, China, Japan and India in 2026, the gap is still very large—but China is the country closing it fastest.

🇺🇸 🇨🇳 🇯🇵 🇮🇳 Naval power in 2026
🇺🇸 USA 🇨🇳 China 🇯🇵 Japan 🇮🇳 India
Aircraft carriers 11 3 2 carrier-capable ships 2
Nuclear carriers 11 0 0 0
Main carrier aircraft F/A-18E/F, F-35C J-15, J-35 F-35B MiG-29K
Submarines ~66–68 ~70+ ~22 ~18
Global reach ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐
Carrier aviation ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐½
Overall naval power #1 #2 #4–5 #3–4

The exact fleet numbers vary by source and by whether ships under maintenance are counted. A 2026 assessment puts the U.S. at 11 carriers and China at 3, while India has 2.

🥇 🇺🇸 United States — still clearly #1

The U.S. advantage isn't simply "11 carriers."

Its carriers are nuclear-powered 100,000-ton-class ships, operating large air wings and supported by:

Nuclear attack submarines
Aegis cruisers/destroyers
Long-range logistics ships
Global overseas bases
Extensive combat experience
F/A-18E/F Super Hornets
F-35C stealth fighters
E-2D Hawkeye airborne early-warning aircraft

In 2025–26, six of the 11 U.S. carriers and six of nine carrier air wings were forward deployed at various points, demonstrating the enormous global operating capacity of the U.S. Navy.

Overall: 🥇 No. 1 by a substantial margin.

🥈 🇨🇳 China — the fastest-growing challenger

China now has:

  1. Liaoning

~60,000 tons
Ski-jump carrier

  1. Shandong

~60,000 tons
Ski-jump carrier

  1. Fujian

~80,000+ tons
Electromagnetic catapults

The Fujian is the big story.

It can launch aircraft using electromagnetic catapults rather than relying on a ski jump. That allows heavier aircraft, larger weapons loads and—very importantly—an airborne early-warning aircraft comparable in concept to the U.S. E-2D.

China is also moving toward the J-35 stealth carrier fighter.

So the progression is roughly:

Liaoning → Shandong → Fujian

And China has publicly discussed building additional carriers. One U.S. Naval Institute assessment says China plans six more by 2035, potentially reaching nine operational carriers.

The big difference

China still doesn't have the U.S. Navy's decades of global carrier experience, worldwide logistics network and nuclear carrier fleet.

But Fujian means China's carrier technology has taken a major step forward.

🥉 🇮🇳 India — two genuine aircraft carriers

India operates:

INS Vikramaditya
INS Vikrant

Both are approximately 45,000 tons and use ski-jump takeoffs. India therefore has two genuine fixed-wing aircraft carriers, unlike Japan's smaller F-35B-capable ships.

The major weakness is the aircraft:

MiG-29K

These are capable fighters, but they are an older generation compared with China's developing J-35 and America's F-35C.

India's advantage is geography: its navy is particularly important in the Indian Ocean, where it can operate close to its own bases.

🇯🇵 Japan — small carrier force, but extremely advanced

Japan is a special case.

Its:

JS Izumo
JS Kaga

are officially classified as destroyers/helicopter carriers, but they are being modified for F-35B operations.

Japan plans 42 F-35Bs. The first aircraft have already been delivered, and Japan is developing its operational capability with U.S. Marine Corps assistance. Izumo's final modification phase is expected to finish in March 2028, while Kaga's is expected in March 2029.

And Japan is operating alongside the U.S. Navy. In June 2026, JS Kaga participated in Valiant Shield alongside USS George Washington and other U.S./Japanese ships in the Philippine Sea.

Japan's strength isn't the ships.

It's the combination:

F-35B + Aegis destroyers + excellent submarines + advanced sensors + U.S. alliance

That's extremely powerful for defending Japan and the surrounding Western Pacific, even though Japan doesn't have American-sized carriers.

🏆 Overall ranking

If we're talking about complete naval power, rather than just carrier numbers:

  1. 🇺🇸 USA ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

World's strongest blue-water navy

  1. 🇨🇳 China ⭐⭐⭐⭐½

Fastest-growing major navy

  1. 🇮🇳 India ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Major Indian Ocean power + 2 real carriers

  1. 🇯🇵 Japan ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Smaller but technologically sophisticated defensive navy

The India vs. Japan ranking is debatable. Some assessments place Japan ahead because of its submarines, Aegis fleet, sensors and alliance structure; others place India ahead because it operates two conventional carriers and has greater independent power-projection capability. A 2026 naval assessment, for example, ranks India #4 and Japan #5 overall.

🚢 The most interesting comparison: USA vs China

The carrier evolution looks like this:

🇺🇸 USA

11 nuclear supercarriers

F-35C + E-2D + huge air wings
