Top 20 things to see and do in Mersin
Mersin is a great destination for you because it combines ancient Cilician history, Roman ruins, early settlements, castles, caves, and Mediterranean scenery. For a two-day visit, I recommend one day for Mersin city and nearby archaeological sites, and one day for the famous coastal sites around Kızkalesi.
One important point: Mersin Province is geographically large. Tarsus is east of the city; Kızkalesi and the Heaven–Hell sinkholes are west. You can see highlights in two days, but visiting all the distant sites is better with a car or organized day tour.
Day 1 — Mersin city, archaeology and the coast
Yumuktepe Mound
High priority
One of the region's most important prehistoric settlements, with occupation layers spanning thousands of years. Especially worthwhile for your interest in early human history. Check access before visiting, as excavation activity can affect entry.
Mersin Archaeology Museum
See archaeological finds from the wider Cilicia region, including pottery, sculpture, funerary objects and material from ancient settlements. Allow 1–2 hours.
Mersin Naval Museum
Exhibits on Turkish naval history, maritime equipment, uniforms and ship models. Convenient to combine with the archaeology museum.
Atatürk Park
A central waterfront park for a relaxed walk, sea views and a break.
Mersin Marina
A modern waterfront promenade with yachts, cafés, restaurants and sunset views.
Soli-Pompeiopolis Ancient City
Remains of an ancient port city, particularly known for its surviving colonnaded street. A strong choice for Roman history.
Muğdat Mosque
One of Mersin's prominent modern mosques, worth a short stop if you are exploring the Yenişehir area.
