The London Museum (formerly known as the Museum of London) is undergoing the most significant transformation in its history. After closing its longtime Brutalist home at London Wall in 2022, the institution is rebranding and preparing to open a massive, state-of-the-art site in the historic Smithfield General Market.
The Relocation & Grand Opening
The museum's flagship permanent galleries are scheduled to officially open to the public on November 28, 2026.
• The New Venue: The museum is breathing new life into Smithfield’s Victorian General Market and the adjacent 1960s Poultry Market. The multi-year project restores these historic trading floors, turning underground vaults into innovative gallery spaces.
• Location & Transit: Located at West Smithfield (EC1A 9PS), the site is highly accessible, situated just a short walk from Farringdon Station (served by the Elizabeth line, Thameslink, and multiple Tube lines) and Barbican Station.
• Admission: Just like its previous iteration, entry to the new permanent galleries will be entirely free.
What to Expect Inside
The museum will chronicle the history of London from prehistoric eras, through the Roman occupation and the 1666 Great Fire, all the way to the 2012 Olympics and the modern digital age. You will be able to see iconic pieces from the collection, including the magnificent Lord Mayor's Coach and authentic Pearly Kings and Queens costumes.
