These distinctive buildings are the famous beehive houses of Harran, Turkey, which were engineered this way to handle the extreme desert climate and a lack of local timber.
Dating back thousands of years in design, these conical houses are architectural masterpieces of survival. Here are the main reasons they were built this way:

🌟 Ultimate Climate Control

• Natural Air Conditioning: The conical shape causes hot air to rise up and escape through the small ventilation hole at the very peak of the dome. This draws cooler air in through the lower doors and windows, keeping the inside temperature around 20°C (68°F) even when it is a blistering 45°C (113°F) outside in the summer.
• Winter Insulation: In the freezing winter, the thick mud-brick walls hold onto heat. The ventilation hole at the top can be plugged up to lock inside warmth from fires.

🪵 Built from Shortage (No Timber)

• Zero Wood Required: The surrounding Mesopotamian plains have almost no trees or forests. Traditional flat roofs require large wooden support beams. The beehive dome completely bypasses this need, allowing builders to construct sturdy, self-supporting roofs using only mud bricks and mortar.
• Recycled Ancient Materials: Many of these structures were built using bricks and stones scavenged from the ruins of ancient historic sites and monuments nearby.

💨 Resistance to the Elements

• Wind Deflection: The circular, aerodynamic shape prevents strong desert windstorms from catching a flat wall surface, making the buildings incredibly resistant to collapse during intense storms.
• Rain Runoff: When rare but torrential rainstorms hit the region, the steep, conical roofs shed water immediately, preventing water from pooling on the roof and eroding the mud structure.

🤝 Modular and Expandable

• Grown with the Family: Each single dome usually covers one room. Because of how they are constructed, if a family grew or needed more storage for grain and animals, they could easily build a new dome right next to the existing one and open up an archway inside to connect them.
